Bengals Blitz: Spring Break Provides Plethora of Games

Recapping the latest happenings in Barnegat High School sports while providing a peek ahead at what is to come

Baseball: Playing two games this past week, Barnegat earned a split but more importantly, sent a message to the rest of division. Barnegat rallied past the Brick Dragons, defending B South champions, 13-6 on Monday.

Highlighting the big day for Barnegat were Mike Fusciello who went 3-for-3 including a triple and 3 RBI's. Freshman Nick Fraim has continued to deliver on the big stage going 2-for-3.

Later in the week, for already the second time of the season, ace pitcher Mark McCoy went the full seven innings but the Bengals failed to win. McCoy did all he could do striking out 10 and pitching a one hitter against Central Regional before losing 3-2.

Coach Dan McCoy's Bengals sit at 2-3 and 2-2 in the division, good enough for third place between Pinelands Regional and Manchester.

Another divisional game will be on tap next week with Lacey coming to town on Wednesday at 3:45. On Friday, the Bengals will travel to Brick Memorial, for another 3:45 afternoon game.

Softball: The Lady Bengals had the same schedule as the baseball team along with the same results this past week. Even more similar was both squads rallying to come from behind for the win and both teams doing most of their damage in the fifth inning.

The game changed with a crack of a bat as Stephanie Butler ripped a triple to plate the go-ahead run and would later score as an insurance run to increase the lead to 4-2. Emily Gambuti was awarded with the win as the pitcher went 3-for-3 with the bat as well beating Brick 5-3. Later in the week they would fall to Central Regional 8-1.

Butler and company will have plenty of time for practice this week with only one game, a home contest against Lacey at 3:45 on Wednesday. The time off will be needed for rest as they will play four games in four days next week.

Boys Lacrosse: Although Coach Ryan Dalon's three game win streak was snapped with a loss at Brick Memorial, they respond with two straight wins, by the slimmest of margins. The Bengals went on the road to battle with a tough Shore Regional squad and came away with an 8-7 win.

Brandon Jecas scored three including the game winner while Ethan Tonnesen paced the attack with four goals. The Bengals had little time to celebrate as they hosted the Jackson Liberty Lions the very next day. Once again, Barnegat came out victorious, this time with a 6-5 win. Goalie Matt Grobelny was leaned on down the stretch with eight saves. Jecas was credited with second game winner in as many days.

On Monday, the Bengals will host Toms River South at 3:45 and travel to Manasquan on Wednesday at 4:00 as the schedule starts to get tougher.

Girls Lacrosse: After dropping the season opener to Toms River South, the Lady Bengals have won five straight games. Against Brick Township on Wednesday, Alexis Corbett carried the Lady Bengals to victory. She scored seven on the day including the game winning goal with 42 seconds to play to lead Barnegat to an 11-10 win.

Barnegat will have a rematch with Lacey on Monday at 3:30 on the road, after winning the first game of the season series 14-7. On Wednesday they will head to Pinelands Regional for a 3:45 game.
