Bengals Blitz: Surging up the Standings
A weekly recap of happenings in Barnegat High School sports, with a look ahead to next week as well.

As we head begin the final full week of April, all the Bengals teams find themselves in a place they would like to stay -- near the top of the standings.
Baseball: The Bengals (4-3, 3-2) sit at second in the B South in the division after a divisional win this week. Manchester sits a half a game ahead at 3-1 and Brick Township is tied with the Bengals but Barnegat holds the head-to-head tiebreaker. Senior Mark McCoy tossed another gem recording all but one out and found some offensive support against Lacey on Wednesday in the 6-1 win. Later, on Friday, the Bengals went up to Brick Memorial and came home with another win. Ray Waszkiewski started and was great as the Bengals got back-to-back quality starts in a 6-2 win. Second basemen Rob DeSanti went 4-for-8 on the week, clubbing home four RBI's.
This week the Bengals will be very busy with four games, including two intra-divisional games. Barnegat will open with three straight home games, all at 3:45. On Monday they will take on 6-3 Toms River East. They will play Pinelands Regional and Monsignor Donovan on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. They will end the week with potential to take the top spot in the division, taking on Manchester on the road, at 3:45, on Friday.

Softball: In their only game of the week, the Lady Bengals improved their record to 5-3 and 3-2 in the division with a 6-5, 10 inning thriller against rival Lacey. After surrendering the go-ahead run in the top of the tenth inning, they walked off winners following Valerie Carcasses's RBI single, her fourth hit of the day. In the small school bracket of the Ocean County Tournament, Barnegat will take on Monsignor Donovan.
In addition to the OCT game on Thursday at MonDon, at 3:45, the Lady Bengals will play three more games this week. Starting with a game at Point Pleasant Beach at 4:00 on Tuesday, the Bengals will host Pinelands Regional on Wednesday for a 3:45 game. The week will end with a 3:45 game at Manchester Township.

Boys Lacrosse: The Bengals went 1-1 this week but to continue to prove themselves with a win over an established Manasquan Warriors program. Earlier in the week, Barnegat lost to Toms River South 7-4. Continuing to have a flair for dramatic games, the Bengals won another nail bitter with a 7-6 win over Manasquan. The Bengals are 6-0 when scoring more than five goals.
There will be three games on tap this week for Barnegat. On Tuesday, the Bengals will host rival Lacey at 3:45 and then Holmdel on Wednesday at 4:00. On Friday their week concludes with a trip to Red Bank Regional for a game at 4:00.
Girls Lacrosse: The Lady Bengals have continued to be the hottest team in Barnegat as they reeled off their seventh straight win and sit at 7-1. Barnegat added two more wins this week, with a 13-8 victory over Lacey and a 16-4 win over Pinelands Regional. Chipping in offensively, Bethany Cunningham, Alexis Corvett, and Sandra Digrazio combined for 11 goals in the win over the Wildcats.
Cunningham and company will look to extend the winning streak to double digits this week as they will travel to Ocean Township on Monday before traveling to Manchester on Wednesday. Friday they will host Brick Township as all three games begin at 3:45. On Saturday morning, the Bengals will travel to Holmdel for a 10AM as the hope to push the win streak to 11 games.
