STAFFORD, NJ — After a special meeting on Jan. 31, Stafford Township officially has a new mayor. Councilman Robert Henken was sworn in Wednesday night.

"I look forward to getting to work and doing some great things with this great council we have," Henken said after he was sworn in. Unanimously appointed by the Township Council, Henken will serve as mayor throughout 2024 and a new mayor for the full term will be on the ballot this November.

Henken's first action as mayor was a proclamation honoring the now-Assemblyman Greg Myhre, whose resignation as mayor opened up the spot for Henken. Myhre also did the honor of swearing Henken in.

The proclamation honored Myhre for his "unwavering dedication to making the Township of Stafford one of the best-run municipalities in the United States."

It listed his accomplishments in his five years as mayor, where he "worked tirelessly with Township Council, township staff and to rebuild relationships with federal, state and local partners to prioritize environmental resilience and fiscal responsibility," the proclamation read.

"I really think our township is going to be in great hands," Myhre said.

Everything mentioned in the proclamation "doesn't happen alone," Myhre said. It's the collaborative work of the council, staff and more, he said.

"You've got your work cut out of you, and a lot of great things in progress," Myhre told Henken. "I know you're gonna have a lot of great ideas and a whole lot of great stuff to do. And I know, if I need something, I know who to call."
