SIERRA CLUB LETTER TO NY RESIDENTS

This week the DEP formally proposed rules that would pull New Jersey from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initative (RGGI).  RGGI is a compact among northeast states that reduces carbon pollution while generating funding for clean energy and energy efficiency programs.  The Governor stopped our participation in the program in 2011, but in March an Appellate Court ruled he could not exit the program without altering the DEP rules.

Now the DEP has just released the rule proposal that would officially remove us from RGGI and we need your help to block it!  Email the DEP NOW & attend the public hearing on August 8, 2014, in Trenton.

When New Jersey participated in RGGI we achieved the greenhouse gas reduction goal of 10% in the first three years. RGGI created $151 million in economic value and 1,772 jobs in our state.  Across the region, RGGI has generated $700 million for investment in clean energy and energy efficiency and created 16,000 new jobs since the program started.  Leaving the program will cost New Jersey those jobs and increase our air pollution.

Especially after Hurricane Sandy, we demand action on climate change. With RGGI we can protect our environment, reduce carbon pollution, and move our state forward economically.

Email the DEP NOW and urge them to pull down this rule proposal so that New Jersey can continue to participate in the RGGI program.  Participating in RGGI will help us meet the goals of President Obama’s Carbon Rule, reduce air pollution, make our state more resilient, and support growing our economy through new technology and clean energy jobs.

SAVE THE DATE! The public hearing on the RGGI Withdrawal Rule will be held on Friday, August 8, 2014, at 10:00 A.M. at:

New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection

First Floor Hearing Room

401 East State Street

Trenton, New Jersey
