BARNEGAT, NJ — You might want to think twice about bringing Fido to the beach with you in Barnegat. If you do, you face a $500 fine.

Township officials sent out a Nixle alert saying that they would be enforcing Chapter 33-5 of the township code - which prohibits pets on the bathing beach - due to an increase of dog activity.

Officials have received "numerous complaints" about dog poop on the Barnegat Bay Beach at Bayshore Drive, according to the alert.

The code prohibits "the allowance of any pet or animal of any sort, kind or description on the beach."

Anyone found on the beach with a dog will be fined $500, township officials said. Fines also will be issued for anyone caught littering on the beach.

"The Township appreciates your cooperation in this matter as we pride ourselves in keeping our Town clean and safe for all to enjoy," officials said.
