Help Clean Up Beaches In Long Beach Island

Clean Ocean Action's "Fall Beach Sweeps" will be held on Oct. 22. Volunteers are needed to help pick up litter at the shore.

LONG BEACH ISLAND, NJ — Clean Ocean Action is seeking volunteers for its "Fall Beach Sweeps" held on Oct. 22.

Twice a year, thousands of volunteers head to more than 70 locations to join COA in helping to clean up New Jersey's shoreline. In 2021, COA picked up a record of more than 500,000 items during sweeps, according to their data.

Those interested in volunteering must register online ahead of time. The sweeps are held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cleanups are held rain or shine. Volunteers are asked to bring a repurposed bucket, bag or other trash receptacle. Wear comfortable, closed-toed shoes, bring clothes and dress appropriately.

Fall Beach Sweeps are held on Long Beach Island at Wally's Restaurant in Surf City (712 Long Beach Blvd.) in a partnership with Alliance for a Living Ocean. There will also be a sweep in West Creek at Stafford Forge Wildlife Management Area (meet at Forge Rd./Martha Rd.).
