How Climbing Barnegat Lighthouse Could Win You A $1,000 Prize

If you visit these landmarks during the Lighthouse Challenge of New Jersey, you'll be entered to win.

BARNEGAT LIGHT, NJ — Visiting the Barnegat Lighthouse and several other landmarks could make you a winner. The Lighthouse Challenge of New Jersey returns Friday and Saturday, challenging participants to visit about 10 lighthouses, two life-saving stations and one museum in two days.

The Barnegat Lighthouse and Barnegat Light Historic Museum represent two stops in the challenge. If you reach every point, notify volunteers at your final stop to enter the drawing for a $1,000 prize.

Here's how to participate:

  1. Take a look at the digital lighthouse map.
  2. Decide where you want to begin.
  3. Plan a route. Here are directions.
  4. Consider that your route might involve staying overnight somewhere.
  5. On Saturday morning, go to your first lighthouse and pick up a souvenir penny booklet for $5. Each lighthouse will have a custom crushed penny for your booklet. You'll need a complete booklet for the end of the challenge.
  6. Embark on your journey. Once you've attended all sites, notify volunteers at your final stop to enter prize drawing.

The challenge, which began in 2000, helps educate the public about lighthouses and life-saving stations, while participants get to tour New Jersey. The event also helps people, including visitors, explore the Jersey Shore in ways they previously haven't. The challenge also raises funds for preserving these historic sites.
