SURF CITY, NJ — After 20 years as a Long Beach Island staple, the Sandbox Café will not be reopening in 2023.

The Surf City breakfast spot's owners announced the closure in a Facebook post on New Year's Eve.

"After a 20- year run we have decided it's time to move on with the next chapter of our lives…. That being retirement and spending more time with our growing family, 3 granddaughters now!" they wrote.

The Surf City location was their second; the Ship Bottom location closed in Jan. 2022 after the owners lost their lease, according to the Asbury Park Press.

The family will stay in the area, though, as the owners shared they have made hundreds of friends who have become family after making LBI their home 28 years ago and have come to love Surf City.

The news was met with hundreds of comments sharing their well-wishes.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you, it cannot be said enough," the owners said. "From the bottoms of our Hearts…WE WILL MISS YOU ALL!!"
