LITTLE EGG HARBOR, NJ — A man died in a crash early Sunday morning on the Garden State Parkway, according to state police. Stephen M. Chiarle, 48, of North Cape May, was killed after another vehicle hit his disabled car, authorities said.

The incident occurred at 2:21 a.m. Sunday in the Parkway's northbound lane. Stephen M. Izzo, 35, of Milmay, drove the vehicle that hit Chiarle's car, authorities said. Izzo suffered "serious injuries," according to police, but his current condition is unclear.

Chiarle was a father of eight, including two children with handicaps, according to a GoFundMe he created in September. He wrote that he was a single father, raising his children with his girlfriend's help.

Chiarle had been disabled for four years, and his family struggled financially, he said. Two of the children lived with Chiarle and his girlfriend, and most were grown.

The roadway near the crash was closed for three-and-a-half hours, police said.
