Southern Senior Signs Commitment

Congratulations Southern Regional Field Hockey senior Emma Wilhelm on her commitment to Indiana University of Pennsylvania Field Hockey to continue her academic and athletic careers. Southern Communications Class Writes for Charities

Southern Regional students enrolled in the elective Communication Concepts: Speech and Writing Beyond the Classroom, researched and then made informational speeches on a charitable organization of their choice. Speeches were critiqued on several categories including, delivery, organization, and content.

The course instructor, Mrs. Abbato, donated money to the student-selected charities that earned the top three scores. They were:

Against Malaria Foundation presented by Derek Medenilla. Derek informed the class that a mere $2 donation could buy a mosquito net that can protect several children from contracting malaria.

Bear Hugs presented by Carlee Nodine. Carlee is personally involved with the locally based non-profit organization that seeks to provide hospitalized children with a stuffed Build-A-Bear to remind them that although they are ill, they are loved and not forgotten.

Disney Conservation Fund, presented by Jessica Datz. Jessica spoke about the need to protect endangered animals and chose this organization for its transparency and commitment to preserving wildlife.

Advanced Ceramics Students Help Prepare for the Rotary Gift Auction

Southern Regional High School Art teacher, Ms. Melissa Penna, and her level III and IV Pottery students visited Sea Oaks Country Club to help decorate for the LBI Rotary’s annual gift auction held on Friday, December 7th. The students’ handmade holiday centerpieces and ornaments have become coveted items that are eagerly anticipated each year. Students spent many hours making hundreds of ornaments and 19 centerpieces. This year’s centerpiece, designed by Abigail LeCompte is an elegant reindeer.

Local Dental Practice Showcases Southern Artists

Team Family Dental, located on Millcreek Road in Manahawkin, has twelve pieces of original artwork, created by Mrs. Hoffman’s Southern Regional Painting & Drawing students, now on display. This is part of an ongoing project, as new pieces will be rotated in approximately every six weeks.

We thank Dr. Burg and his team for the opportunity to showcase some of the talented artists from Southern Regional High School!

Middle School Teacher William Smith Honored as Finalist for NJ State Teacher of the Year

William Smith, a social studies teacher at the Middle School, is being recognized as a Finalist for New Jersey State Teacher of the Year. This past summer, Smith was also named the Ocean County Teacher of the Year. He attended the Award Ceremony with Principal Dr. Elisabeth Brahn, as well as his fiancé, Arielle.
