Overnight Fire Causes Delays In Barnegat Schools

A small kiln fire overnight at the Horbelt School meant that the district experienced a two-hour delayed opening Friday.

BARNEGAT, NJ — One of Barnegat's schools had a small fire overnight, causing delays in the district, according to officials.

The fire started some time overnight in a kiln in the pottery/art room at Horbelt Intermediate School, Barnegat police said.

"Thanks to the quick action of the sprinkler system and the Barnegat Fire Department the fire was extinguished with minimal damage," police said.

No one was injured and the district is working to repair the minor damages sustained, according to police.

However, since the sprinklers were activated, some rooms in the school flooded and students attended Barnegat High School on Friday.

Due to transportation needs and student displacement, the entire district went on a two-hour delayed opening, according to officials.

Horbelt students were shuttled to the high school, and Horbelt before and after care will be held at the high school as well.

Police thanked the fire department for its fast response time.
