Scammers are pretending to be Barnegat police officers to get personal information from residents.

BARNEGAT, NJ — Police are warning Barnegat residents of a new phone scam where the caller pretends to be an officer in an attempt to get personal information.

Residents have reported receiving phone calls "from someone claiming to be from the Barnegat Township Police Department advising them that they are a victim of identity theft and asking for personal information," according to police.

"Please remember, if you have a feeling that something is wrong, there probably is," police said.

Police shared the following tips to avoid becoming a victim of a scam.

  • Just because your caller ID says it's the Barnegat Police, doesn't mean it is
  • If someone calls claiming to be from the Barnegat Police Department and you're not sure, ask for their name and call the department back at 609-698-5000 and ask for the officer by name
  • BTPD will never ask you for personal information over the phone including your social security number, credit card or banking information
  • BTPD will never ask to allow us to gain access to your computer over the internet
  • Any person who requests that you buy gift cards from the store is most likely trying to scam you
