Police Warn Of 'Smash And Grab' Burglaries In Barnegat

Barnegat police shared tips for business owners to deter a rise of smash and grab thefts seen throughout the county.

BARNEGAT, NJ — Overnight smash and grab burglaries are on the rise in Barnegat and throughout Ocean County, and police are sharing tips for business owners to help deter them.

Two Ocean County men were recently charged following a string of smash and grabs in Manchester, Toms River and Lakewood. The duo targeted bagel shops and pizzerias, plus the Lakewood Industrial Park, according to authorities.

Barnegat police urged business owners to use the following tips:

  • Install shatterproof or laminated glass windows and doors to make it more difficult for burglars to break in quickly.
  • Empty all cash registers when closing your business and leave the till drawer open and visible showing there is no money in the register
  • Install bright exterior lighting around all entry points and the perimeter of the building to deter burglars.
  • Invest in a reliable alarm system that alerts you and authorities when a break-in is detected.
  • Set up visible security cameras to monitor all entry points and areas of interest. Ensure cameras have night vision capabilities.
  • Use heavy, bolted-down safes for storing cash, important documents, and other valuables.
  • Take high-value items off display and secure them after business hours.
  • Ensure windows are clear of obstructions so that passersby and patrols can see inside.
