A Nixle alert sent out just before noon Nov. 2 had few details, only telling residents to "avoid the area if it all possible."
The Ocean County Sheriff's Office sent out a similar alert shortly after.
Around the same time, Barnegat parents reported receiving emails from the school district alerting them that all district schools were sheltering in place at the time.
"Due to police activity we have been advised to have all the district schools go into a Shelter in Place," the email said. "We will send out more information once we receive it."
