Southern Alumna Visits Clothing Classes

A Southern graduate spoke to Mrs. Julie Yonney-Kriebel’s clothing construction classes about her experiences in fashion and design. Melinda Danko (class of 2006) credits the Southern sewing program for fueling her passion and developing her talent.

Danko graduated from Fashion Institute of Technology and went on to create movie sets, start her own clothing brand and work for a seamless knit designer and manufacturer in Japan. She is currently the product manager for Circle Visual, where she specializes in visual merchandising, creating window displays, décor, and props for special events.

Her clients have included Diane von Furstenberg, Tommy Hilfiger, Kate Spade, Victoria’s Secret, Bergdorf Goodman, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Last year, Danko made a large donation to Southern of high-end fabrics.

Southern Students Honored At Art Festival

Several Southern Regional students were selected for Outstanding Achievement at the Ocean County Teen Arts Festival. The following students and groups will represent Ocean County at the NJ State Teen Arts Festival in May:

  • Large Instrumental – Southern Regional Jazz Ensemble
  • Large Theatre – Southern Regional Improv Players
  • 2-D Visual Art – Timothy Oler and Dean Klunk
  • 3-D Visual Art – Tyler Smith and Meghan Alfredsen

The annual Ocean County festival offers students to get critiqued on visual art, theatre, musical theatre, vocal, dance, instrumental, creative writing and videos. The festival offers workshops and classes each day.

LBI Foundation of the Arts To Display Student Work

Southern Regional Middle and High School students will display their artwork at this year's Gallery Exhibited at the LBI Foundation of the Arts in Loveladies. The show, which is open to the public, runs until April 9.

Southern Athletes Visit McKinley School

Southern Regional athletes visited McKinley Avenue School for Sportsmanship Day on March 18. They provided positive and inspiring messages for students.

Fitness Teams Qualify for Championships

Southern Regional's boys and girls fitness teams qualified for the 2019 United States Marines Youth Foundation Physical Fitness National Championships at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pa., on May 18.

The teams earned their qualifying scores at the Marine Crop Youth Fitness Region One Fitness Championship last weekend in Elizabeth. The team was coached by Jenna Lombardo and assisted at the event by Stafford Police officer Anthony Vincent. The girls’ team took second overall at the Regional Competition.
