FCCLA Members Earn Medals, Red Rose Award

Southern Regional's Family, Career and Community Leaders of America members were successful competing in the FCCLA State Conference and Competition on March 28 and 29 in Cherry Hill.

Southern Regional Middle School and High School participated. Sue Stinson advises the Southern Regional chapter.

The middle school earned "Red Rose Chapter" Designation — 1 of 4 in the state for excellence of FCCLA programming and practice. The middle school also won the state's Membership Increase Award.

Southern Regional Middle and High School students earned medals in the following categories:

  • Gianna DeBruyn - elected to New Jersey State Executive Council for next school year (earned - 1st place gold medal - Career Investigation Project)
  • Bella Hargrove and Ryleigh McDonald - earned 1st place Gold medal - Food Innovations
  • Marley Gaskill - earned 2nd place - Bronze medal - Illustrated Talk
  • Faith McKibbin and Emily Hoosack - earned 1st place Gold Medal - Perfect Score - Life Event Planning
  • Rebecca Longinetti and Avery Spisak - Bronze Medal - Sports Nutrition
  • Reese Kosinski - Bronze Medal - Cake Decorating
  • Lorelei Philhower - 1st place Silver Medal - FCCLA Speaks
  • Juliana Gentile - Silver Medal - Luncheon Menu
  • Rachel Martin - 1st place Gold - Career Investigation Senior division
  • Shay'la Duca - 1st Place Silver - Digital Stories for Change - Senior division; 2nd Place Gold - Successories - Senior division
  • Alexis Rosko - 3rd place Bronze - Food Innovations - Senior division; Silver - Luncheon Menu Showcase
  • Chelsea Olender - 2nd Place Gold - Job Interview - Senior Division; Elected for a 3rd year to the State Executive Council Position 2019-20
  • Kristina Bates - 1st Place Gold- Successories - Junior Division
  • Arielle Rosko - Bronze - Cake Decorating

These eight students — five in middle school, three in high school — are now eligible for the FCCLA National Leadership conference this year: Chelsea Olender (11), Shay'la Duca (11), Rachel Martin (10), Gianna DeBruyn (08), Emily Hoosack (08), Faith McKibbin (08), Bella Hargrove (07), Ryleigh McDonald (07).

Food Truck Festival Fundraiser

Southern Regional High School's Class of 2021 will hold its second annual Food Truck Festival Fundraiser from noon to 5 p.m. May 18 at the high school.

Cost of admission is $5. It includes access to different food trucks, an ice cream truck, a variety of vendors and live music. The fundraiser's entrance fee also covers children’s activities including games and prizes, as well as emergency vehicles to explore, face painting and a bounce house.

Pinelands Regional Visits Southern's Furry Friends

Staff members from Pinelands Regional High School visited Thursday to observe members of the PAWS program. They met with Finn, Huey, and program starters, Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Gardener-Luongo. Pinelands hopes to start their own therapy dog program, TAILS.

Teacher Appointed To NJ Board of Directors

Bill Smith, 2018 Ocean County Teacher of the Year and NJ State Teacher of the Year Finalist, was appointed to the Board of Directors for the NJ Council of the Social Studies.

The NJCSS is the only statewide association in NJ devoted solely to social studies education.

Sports Shorts

  • The Southern baseball team defeated Central Regional, 4-0, Saturday in the #StrikeOutAutism game. Pitcher Mike Schiattarella was named game MVP.
  • The boys volleyball team won the 2019 Hillsborough Raider Invitational on Saturday. The Rams defeated Fair Lawn, 25-23, in the finals to move to 7-0.
  • The boys track shuttle hurdle crew set a new school record of 62.56.

  • The softball team finished second overall at the 2019 St. Joseph Hammonton Tournament last weekend. The Rams defeated Middle Township, 3-2 (8) and Gateway, 14-0.
  • Southern alumna Abbey Yannacone recorded three goals and an assist Saturday to help the Stockton women's lacrosse team defeat Ramapo College, 14-13.
