MANAHAWKIN, NJ — Southern Regional Middle School students recently participated in "Greek Fest." Social studies teacher Rachel Katsianis and English teacher Jason Lister worked together to design and implement an interdisciplinary unit with seventh-graders.

Over a two-week period, students identified personal interests associated with ancient Greece and narrowed themselves to one topic. The teachers grouped students based on interests and guided them through a multifaceted, collaborative project.

Of the many tasks required of them, students strengthened some of the most crucial skills associated with middle school education: collaboration, flexibility and open-mindedness, as well as research, writing and presentation skills.
