Hall of Famers To Be Inducted

Southern Regional named its class for the Athletic Hall of Fame. An induction Ceremony will take place from 2-5 p.m. March 23 at Calloway's Restaurant (597 Route 9, Staffordville).

The following members and teams will receive induction:

• Dan Higgins (Class of 2013)
• Avery Hodgson-Walters (Class of 2010)
• Nick Jinks (Class of 2013)
• Luke King (Class of 2013)
• Greg Miele (Class of 2005)
• Ryan North (Class of 2012)
• Coach Virginia Lambert
• NJSIAA State Champions – Boys Volleyball 2013, 2014
• NJSIAA South Jersey Sectional Champions – Boys Volleyball 2012
• NJSIAA South Jersey Group 4 Sectional Champions – Boys Lacrosse 2013, 2014

Bassoonist performing at NJPAC

Sophomore bassoonist Amanda Rutkowski will perform at NJPAC in Newark with the Symphonic Band at 3 p.m. Feb. 23. Rutkowski captured fifth-place bassoon seat for the All-State Band and second seat in the All-State Orchestra.

Rider Wrestling Honors Ocean County Teacher of the Year

William Smith, a former member of the Rider wrestling team, received honors from the Broncs for earning Ocean County Teacher of the Year. The team recognized Smith during its Jan. 17 match against Iowa State.

Smith teaches social studies at Southern Regional Middle School. He earned Ocean County Teacher of the Year in August and is a finalist for NJ State Teacher of the Year.

He was a member of the 2003-04 Rider team that finished in the national top 25. A replay of the match is available on ESPN3.

Sports Shorts

• The Southern ice hockey team defeated Toms River North, 9-2, on Senior Night on Friday. The Rams honored seniors Andrew Garcia, Joe Cajzer and Jake Drazin.
• The Southern girls basketball team defeated Brick Memorial, 56-48, on Senior Night on Friday. The team honored seniors Jacqueline Ward, Kyleigh Bell, Christina D'Amodio and Nicole Conroy.
• Southern football players Carmen Deo and Luke Galan made the Shore Conference Football Coaches Association All-Academic team for the 2018-2019 school year.
• Rams wrestlers John Stout (182 pounds) and JT Cornelius (220 pounds) placed fifth in their respective weight classes Jan. 19-20 at the "Escape the Rock" tournament in Pennsylvania.
