MANAHAWKIN, NJ — A Southern Regional High School football player has the chance for himself and his coach to be honored at a future New York Giants game thanks to his nomination for the "Heart of a Giant" award.

Alex Fowler, who also does lacrosse and indoor track, was nominated for USA Football's Heart of a Giant Award presented by Hospital for Special Surgery and the New York Giants by the school's athletic director Chuck Donohue, Jr.

Fowler was nominated for his "commitment," according to a news release. He is one of 10 nominees that you can vote for now here.

"In today's society with the selfish behaviors that could come about in athletics Alex is the complete opposite," Donohue said of Fowler in his nomination. "He is accountable for his actions, dedicated to the team and committed to being the best person, student-athlete for our school, athletic program, and football team."

Fowler always has his teammates' backs, Donohue said, and is also supportive of the coaching staff.

"Football taught me that everyone puts on their cleats the same way, and I learned if I worked hard enough and dedicated myself to making myself better. It didn't matter my size and that I could play with anyone," Fowler wrote in his bio for USA Football.

"He will be very successful in his life in whatever he chooses to do and will also without a doubt be a contributing member to his society," Donohue said, noting that Fowler would be "an excellent candidate" for the award.

The voting period for these nominees is now open until Sept. 24, with the final vote tally determining who will be named the weekly group's finalist.

At the end of the 6-week voting process six finalists and five wild card finalists will be named, for a total of 11 finalist honorees. Each finalist will receive $1,000 grant for their high school's football program, with the grand prize winner's school getting an additional $9,000 equipment grant. The grand prize winner and his coach will be honored on the field at a future New York Giants game this season. The grand prize winner will be selected based on video submissions stating why they have the Heart of a Giant.
