FCCLA Students Attend Leadership Bootcamp

Ten Southern Regional Middle and High School students attended the New Jersey FCCLA Leadership Bootcamp on Jan. 12. FCCLA (Family Career and Community Leaders of America) is a national student-run career and technical organization that focuses on family.

The event at J.P. Stevens High School in Edison was dedicated to members who wanted to focus on developing leadership potential. Southern students developed skills such as using leadership language, working through a team-building obstacle course and learning about leadership qualities. Students explored whether they are extroverted or introverted leaders.

FCCLA students were able leave their comfort zones, practice public speaking and job interview skills, explore table etiquette and more.

Attendees included high school students Shayla Duca, Rachel Martin, and Chelsea Olender, and middle school students Faith McKibbin, Lorelei Philhower, Gianna DeBruyn, Marley Gaskill, Danielle Zdep, Avery Spisak and Kallie Hynes.

Southern Regional Fishing Show

The Southern Regional Fishing Flea Market will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 16 at Southern Regional Middle School (75 Cedar Bridge Rd., Manahawkin).

One of the largest fishing shows in Ocean County, this event will feature over 100 tables of new and used fishing gear and tackle. Experts such as Harold Eckett and Chuck Nagel will lead seminars at 9 a.m., 9:45 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Raffles will take place every half hour.

Admission costs $4, but children under 12 can enter free when accompanied by an adult. Proceeds benefit the Southern Regional High School Fishing Club, including scholarships for four-year club members.

Senior Makes Thoroughbred Makeover Program

Southern senior Erin Moran was accepted as a trainer into the Thoroughbred Makeover 2019 program in October in Kentucky. The selective program allows potential horse trainers to retrain off the track Thoroughbreds and make them into show horses.

Moran is working with George, a 4-year-old Thoroughbred has healed after breaking his ankle on the track.

Get Gritty Day

This seventh-grade workshop allows students to explore the benefits of grit. Students will use the story and example of Southern Regional Gritty Grad Dani Burt — World Adaptive Surfing Champion — to develop their own definition and examples of grit.

Students will participate in hands-on activities Feb. 15 designed to challenge them to tap into these characteristics.

SRMS Career Expo

Twenty-three people, including some Southern Regional alumni and local-business representatives, will offer presentations to eighth-graders on their career paths on Feb. 15. Presenters will come from the 16 career clusters, as defined by the Association for Career and Technical Training.

Sports Shorts

The Southern wrestling team defeated Toms River South, 68-4, last Wednesday. The team also defeated Monroe on Saturday to finish the regular season.

Southern girls basketball player Kaela Curtin won the Jersey Sports Zone Week 4 Central Jersey Game Ball for her performance in Jan. 24's 55-47 win against Lacey. Curtin recorded 22 points and 12 rebounds.

The Southern boys and girls bowlers will continue into the postseason. Brick Township defeated the Rams, 2-1, on Friday.
