According to Save Barnegat Bay, rain barrels provide a number of useful functions. Rain barrels collect stormwater, which can be harmful to the watershed and contribute to pollution. This water can be repurposed and be used to water lawns or cars, for example. Rain barrels conserve water, reduce erosion and flooding and reduce runoff and non-point source pollution, Save Barnegat Bay said.
