Stafford, LBI Towns Earn NJ Transportation Grants

MANAHAWKIN, N.J. — Stafford and several LBI towns will receive state grants to advance road, bridge, safety and quality-of-life improvements. The 2019 Municipal Aid Grant program total $161.25 million and cover 537 New Jersey municipalities (95 percent of them).

Here's where the state will allocate money locally:

• Stafford: Improvements to Breakers Drive, Phase I, $365,000
• Barnegat Light: West 6th Street, $314,000
• Beach Haven: 9th St. Delaware Ave. Seagull Lane, $305,630
• Harvey Cedars: Cedars Avenue, $226,297
• Long Beach Township: Cedar Drive, $343,000
• Ship Bottom: 6th St. Bay Terrace, $292,897
• Surf City: N. 4th St. N. 7th St., $380,000

The Municipal Aid grant program attracted 681 applications from 544 municipalities with a total of $377 million in work. An independent panel of New Jersey municipal engineers, with the support of the NJ Department of Transportation, evaluate and rate project applications on their merits.

The dollar value for this program has doubled for the second straight year ($78.75 million last year). Under the program, each county is appropriated a share of total state funding based on population and the number of local centerline miles.

Applications were submitted to NJDOT by October 2018 fore review. The program features seven project categories eligible for funding: Roadway Preservation, Roadway Safety, Quality of Life, Mobility, Bikeway, Pedestrian Safety, and Bridge Preservation.
