MANAHAWKIN, NJ — The Stafford Township Police Department asked the public for comment as they go through the accreditation process. The department is set for an on-site assessment as part of the process through the New Jersey Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission.

The voluntary program — administered by the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police — requires agencies to comply the standards of "best practices" in law enforcement. As part of the on-site process, employees and community members are welcome to offer comments to accreditation assessors.

To offer comment call 609-597-1189 ext. 8232 between 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday. Telephone comments are limited to five minutes and must address Stafford PD's ability to comply with the accreditation standards.

"Accreditation results in greater accountability within the agency, reduced risk and liability exposure, stronger defense against civil lawsuits, increased community advocacy, and more confidence in the agency’s ability to operate efficiently and respond to community needs,” Dellane said.

The assessment team includes law enforcement from similar New Jersey agencies. Assessors will review written materials, interview agency members and visit offices and other places to observe compliance of standards. Assessors will release a full report to the commission upon completion of the review, which will determine whether the agency achieves accreditation status.

Accreditation is valid for three years. During that time, the agency must submit annual reports attesting to their continued compliance of those standards.
