Stockton Men's and Women's Soccer Teams Seeing Early Success

With its 4-0 win over Alvernia University over the weekend, the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey men’s soccer team improved its record to 3-2-1, according to stocktonathletics.com.

Chris Katona scored three times for the Ospreys in the win, and Matt Jenne had another goal in the shutout, Stockton’s third of the year. Goalies Bob Millar and Bobby Varga combined for the shutout, with Millar playing 81 minutes, 30 seconds of the game.

The Ospreys opened the season with a shutout win, 1-0 over St. Mary’s College of Maryland in the Salisbury Tournament on Aug. 31. Katona scored the game’s only goal, in overtime. Millar was responsible for the shutout. Stockton then lost to host Salisbury University, 1-0, in the final of the tournament.

Millar’s other shutout came in a 0-0 tie with Boston College in the Stockton Seashore Classic on Sept. 8. The tie came after a 2-1 loss to Lebanon Valley College in the first round of the tournament. Clevon McPherson scored for the Ospreys in the loss.

Stockton’s only New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game to date was a 3-2 win over Kean University on Sept. 12. McPherson had the game-winning goal with 2:10 left in regulation. Katona and Absegami High School alum Sean Ahern also scored in the win.

Stockton returns to the pitch Tuesday night, Sept. 18 at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ).

The women’s soccer team improved to 5-1-1 following a 7-0 victory over Immaculata University on Saturday, Sept. 15. Jacque Becker led the way with three goals for the Ospreys, who produced their highest out output of the season. Rachel Carlson, Lexi Stasi, Anita Lato and Dailey Todd also scored in the win, and Sarah Hinkle, Lauren Haynes, Brittney Boyle and Cara Parliament split time in goal in the shutout, Stockton’s third of the year.

The Ospreys started the season 3-0, including a championship at the Kean tournament Aug. 31-Sept. 1. The Ospreys opened with a 2-1 win over Shenandoah University, with Becker scoring the game-winner. Jessica Balnis also scored. Hinkle, Boyle and Parliament split the shutout victory in the final, a 3-0 win over Elms College. Becker, Stasi and Danielle McKeown scored in the win.

Stockton followed with another 3-0 win, over Salisbury University. Balnis had two goals in the win, and Kiera Hines added another. Hinkle had the solo shutout.

Stockton then suffered its only loss of the season thus far, 1-0 to Virginia Wesleyan College in the Christopher Newport tournament. The Ospreys bounced back with a 3-2 win over host Christopher Newport behind goals from Becker, Todd and Jess McQuillen.

On Sept. 12, Stockton tied Misericordia University, 1-1. The Ospreys return to action Wednesday, at 7 p.m. at home against The College of New Jersey (TCNJ).

The field hockey team’s lone win this season came on Sept. 8 in a 3-2 decision over Wesley College. Brittany Iveson scored twice and Susie Balidemaj scored once in the win.
