Waretown Man Struck, Killed Trying To Cross Route 9: Prosecutor's Office

Preliminary investigation showed that pedestrian failed to yield to traffic, spokesman says.

A 76-year-old Waretown man was killed on Route 9 Wednesday night when he was struck by a Hyundai Sonata at the intersection of Clearwater Drive and Route 9, a spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said.

Dayal Chakrabarty was trying to cross in a west to east direction when he was hit in the southbound travel portion of the lane at 8:08 p.m., by a car driven by a 36-six-year-old Waretown man, spokesman Al Della Fave said.

The vehicle was heading south on Route 9 when the accident occurred, according to an investigation by the Ocean Township Police Department and the Prosecutor's Office Accident Investigation Unit.

Chakrabarty was taken to Southern Ocean County Hospital in Manahawkin, where he was pronounced deat at 9:16 p.m., Della Fave said.

The Sonata driver showed no sign of impairment. He was taken to the hospital, where he consented to provide a blood sample. He also agreed to a search of his cell phone, which came back negative, Della Fave said.

Chakrabarty was wearing dark clothing and the roadway in that area had little to no lighting. A preliminary investigation found that he was at fault because he did not yield to traffic. There are no traffic lights and no pedestrian crosswalk, Della Fave said.
