Watch For Comcast Bill Scam, Barnegat Police Warn
The scammer pretends to be Comcast and texts residents to buy gift cards to lower your monthly bill, Barnegat police said.
BARNEGAT, NJ — Barnegat police are warning of a Comcast bill reduction scam that has been targeting residents recently.
According to police, residents receive a text claiming to be from Comcast, offering a fantastic opportunity to lower your monthly bill.
The message instructs you to purchase gift cards like Amazon, Target or another popular store.

Once the gift cards are purchased, the scammer asks that you provide them with the gift card numbers via text message or phone call.
But after you share those numbers, the scammer vanishes, "leaving you with no bill reduction and an empty wallet," police said.

Police offer the following key points to protect yourself and loved ones from falling victim to these scams:
- Comcast's Official Communications: Comcast will never ask you to purchase gift cards or provide personal information via text message.
- Verify with Comcast: If you receive any suspicious messages, contact Comcast directly using their official customer service channels to verify the authenticity of the communication.
- Don't Share Sensitive Information: Never share personal or financial information with unknown individuals or over insecure channels.
- Share this message with your friends, family, senior citizens who may be more vulnerable, in community forums, social media, and with local organizations to help protect everyone from scams.
- Do not hesitate to contact the Barnegat Police Department if you are not sure if something could be a scam (purchasing gift cards/wiring money/giving cash to a driver,etc).
