What's Coming Up at Tonight's BOE Meeting

Members to be sworn in; nine layoffs to be approved

Here are a few highlights from the agenda of the Barnegat Board of Education's upcoming reorganization meeting. The meeting is at 6:30 p.m. at .

  • Newly elected board member Alice Olker will be sworn in at the start of the meeting along with reelected members Lisa Becker and Denise Pilovsky.
  • The board will vote on motions approving layoffs for nine district employees. Hundreds will be rehired by motions, and 20 teachers are up for tenure this year.
  • The agenda includes a string of motions approving everything from the curriculum for the 2011-2012 school year to the appointment of the district’s Integrated Pest Control Management Coordinator. A notable change for the upcoming school year is the authorization of District Business Administrator Dean Allison to award contracts up to a bid threshold of $36,000 as per his recent certification as a qualified purchasing agent.
  • Included in the Finance Committee’s list of motions is one approving payment to Superintendent Jason Bing for 11.5 days of accrued vacation time, per his contract, amounting to $6,589.85. 
  • The Education Committee will address a motion to approve the senior class trip to Disney World, which is set for May 21-24. The cost per student is $1,000, and the school will arrange for 15 chaperones and two administrators to accompany the seniors.
  • Project Graduation, an all-night party for graduating seniors, is also up for approval by motion. The event runs from 10 p.m. June 16, the day of graduation, to 6 a.m. June 17 and includes a cruise around Manhattan on the Spirit of New Jersey. Cost per student is $15.
