2 Rabid Raccoons Found In Basking Ridge, Peapack Gladstone

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Two raccoons have recently tested positive for rabies, the Bernards Township Health Department reports Thursday.
One raccoon tested positive in Bernards Township and the other in the Borough of Peapack Gladstone. In both cases, the family dog came into direct contact with the raccoons which resulted in the exposure to the rabies virus, the health department reported.
Residents are being reminded to make sure all family pets are up to date on their rabies vaccinations and licenses.

Rabies, a deadly disease caused by a virus found in the saliva of a rabid animal, is transmitted by a bite or scratch. Rabies is preventable with prompt medical attention.
Anyone who has been bitten or scratched by a wild or stray domestic animal should wash the area with soap and water and seek medical attention immediately. If a pet is bitten or scratched, visit a veterinarian immediately for treatment. In either case, promptly report the incident to police and local health department.
