SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — The second year of the coronavirus pandemic continued to impact many businesses in 2021 particularly the mall.

Larger retailers such as Crate & Barrel and even smaller locally-owned businesses struggled to survive in the area.

As 2021 comes to a close, let's take a look at the establishments we lost in 2021 in Somerset County:

1. Crate & Barrel To Close, Bridgewater Looks To Rezone Building

Crate & Barrel will be closing its Bridgewater location at the end of 2021 and the township recently approved an ordinance at the Dec. 20 meeting to rezone the building to allow for medical uses at the mall owner's request.

2. Godiva To Close Bridgewater, All NJ Locations Due To Pandemic

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — Chocolatier Godiva is melting away in New Jersey as it became the latest victim of the coronavirus pandemic. Godiva announced plans to close all of its 128 North American stores, including its Bridgewater Commons mall location.

3. Disney Store Is Closing In Bridgewater Commons

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — Sad news for Mickey Mouse fans. The Disney Store in the Bridgewater Commons mall is closing.

4. Starbucks, Aldo Closes In Bridgewater Commons

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — Take a stroll through Bridgewater Commons and one can not help but notice widespread vacancies, which have only been exasperated by the coronavirus pandemic.

Most recently Starbucks closed up shop on the main level of the Bridgewater Commons but will remain open at The Village at Bridgewater Commons.

5. After 50 Years, Beloved Hillsborough Dance Academy Is Closing

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — After 50 years in business, Kathleen Cirioli is bringing down the final curtain and closing her beloved dance studio in Hillsborough.

Cirioli opened her studio, Kathleen's Dance Academy, at 411 Route 206, when she was 20 years old. Throughout the years she made memories and connections with families as she shared her passion for dance.

6. Veneto Ristorante In Basking Ridge To Close Permanently

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Veneto Ristorante Pizzeria will soon close for good. The Basking Ridge restaurant announced Wednesday night that it will shutter after the business day March 28.

"Through the years we have gotten to know and your families, seen your children grow into adults, and adults into grandparents," said a note from ownership and staff on the restaurant Facebook page.

7. Warren, Bernardsville Food Markets To Close Next Week

WARREN, NJ — Sadly, the Warren and Bernardsville locations of the Kings Food Markets will be permanently closing. Both locations will close on or before Jan. 23, said Kim Yorio, spokeswoman for Kings.
