$835K Police Radio Upgrade Coming To Bernards Township

The funding would pay for 89 radios for the police department in Bernards Township under a House-passed federal spending bill.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Bernards Township is slated to receive $835,000 for a police department communications upgrade.

Earlier this year, Congressman Tom Kean Jr. secured $3.8 million in federal funding for communities, including Bernards Township.

"This is great support for our police department," said Mayor Ana Duarte McCarthy at the Tuesday Commitee meeting. "Whether it is responding to emergencies or just connectivity, this is wonderful support for those who serve us."

Duarte McCarthy said the money will fund 89 radios for the department, including 50 tri-band portable radios and 39 tri-band mobile radios.

The department’s current radios are single-band and are nearing the end of their useful lifespan.

The township is looking to purchase the tri-band radios for officers and frontline police vehicles so the department can improve communications during critical incidents and communicate directly with other law enforcement agencies in Somerset County and the broader region.

"Thanks to this federal grant, our department is making a critical investment in modern, reliable communications that directly enhance officer safety and public service. These upgraded radios will improve clarity, and coverage, ensuring that when seconds matter, our officers can communicate effectively and coordinate seamlessly during emergencies," said Bernards Township Police Chief Timothy King. "Furthermore, this funding allows us to modernize essential equipment without placing additional burden on our taxpayers, while strengthening our ability to respond to incidents, protect sensitive information, and serve our community at the highest level."

"These projects represent meaningful, on-the-ground investments that will strengthen public safety, upgrade emergency communications, modernize critical infrastructure, and protect public health for years to come," stated Kean Jr.
