Affinity Federal Credit Union Foundation is Fired Up About Rutgers' The Big Chill

Basking Ridge, N.J. (December 28, 2015) – On Saturday, December 5th, Affinity Federal Credit Union Foundation sponsored the 13th annual Rutgers’ The Big Chill 5K race in New Brunswick, New Jersey. More than 9,400 people registered for the event and then took to the streets early Saturday morning in order to bring toys to the children who live in housing provided by the City of New Brunswick and Franklin Township, as well as a number of other charities where children are in need. According to CompuScore, a race timing solutions company, The Big Chill has become the largest 5K in the state and is considered by many to be one of the best-conducted races in the tri-state area.

The Big Chill is a unique race in that the participants are neither required to pay a registration fee nor raise funds, but instead to bring a new toy for children between the ages of 3 and 14. This year, over 11,000 toys were collected on race day, exceeding the first year’s total by more than 6,000 toys. The children’s gifts were wrapped by 250 volunteers the following Monday and sent to the administrative offices of the New Brunswick Housing Authority, the Franklin Housing Authority, The Salvation Army of Bound Brook, The American Red Cross of Central New Jersey and ten others.
