Basic Horse Care Workshop at Lord Stirling Stable

Somerset County Park Commission Lord Stirling Stable is offering Horse Care Workshop 101 for adults and youth seeking to gain experience and confidence around horses through a combination of non-riding activities and hands-on practice.

Horse Care Workshop 101 will be held at Lord Stirling Stable, 256 South Maple Avenue in Basking Ridge, NJ beginning Saturday January 6, 2018 from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. Horse Care Workshop 101 sections run for 5 consecutive weeks. Registration is now open.

Participants will learn the basics of horse care including the proper way to safely handle a horse, groom, and tack up a horse. The parts of the horse, saddle, and bridle are discussed, in addition to horse breeds, colors, and the roles the veterinarian and farrier play in basic horse care. There is no riding involved in this program.

Registration is available in person at the Stable office and will be accepted up to the opening day of the Workshops as space permits. Fee is $60 for Somerset County residents and $90 for non-residents.

Lord Stirling Stable is situated on 450 acres with 18 miles of trails (wooded and fields), one indoor ring, three outdoor rings, and an outdoor jumping course.

Blue “BOBO (Buy One – Bring One) Fridays” bins now are located at the Lord Stirling Stable and the Environmental Education Center in Basking Ridge, as well as at the Somerset County Park Commission headquarters at North Branch Park in Bridgewater. The public is invited to drop off canned food or personal care items for donation to Somerset County food banks.
