Basking Ridge Performer To Star In The 'Elf On The Shelf' Musical

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Basking Ridge native Peter Hughes caught the theater bug very early on in life and hasn't stopped. Now he is starring in "The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Musical" coming to the Basie Center in Red Bank for one day only on Dec. 23.

"This is a super unique show," said Hughes. "There are new songs, new scenes, a lot of new materials. It is really cool to be among the people to create this from the ground up."

Hughes is performing as the main character Tater Tot. The musical follows Tater Tot as he is assigned to a new holiday family and learns the true meaning of faith, hope, and love.

"The musical itself basically transports audiences to the North Pole to see the magical scout elves," said Hughes. "It is a super sweet show. Great for all ages, something for everyone."

Hughes began his theater career early on at Ridge High School.

"I caught the theater bug very early on," said Hughes.

He began performing with the Livingston Community Players where he did his first show "The King and I."

While at Ridge High School, Hughes recounted the "fantastic arts programs" and teachers who really fostered his love for theater.

"Ridge provided a lot of great opportunities and it was so close to New York City," said Hughes, who took dance classes in the city.

"It kind of rolled from there. I never really lost my passion for it," said Hughes.

The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Musical comes to the Basie Center's Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at 99 Monmouth St., Red Bank, for two shows on Thursday, Dec. 23 at 2 and 6 p.m.
