Basking Ridge Quarry Plan To Be Voted On Wednesday

The fate of the Quarry Redevelopment Concept Plan will be decided Wednesday during a meeting at Ridge High School PAC at 7 p.m.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Following months of contention between the Bernards Township Committee and residents, the controversial Quarry Redevelopment Concept Plan may finally be coming to an end.

The fate of the project will be voted on during Wednesday night's special meeting to be held at the Ridge High School PAC at 268 S. Finley Ave., in Basking Ridge at 7 p.m.

A resolution to revoke the designation of the Millington Quarry property as a non-condemnation redevelopment area and to further reject the Draft Quarry Redevelopment Concept Plan in its entirety is on the Bernards Township Committee agenda for Wednesday night.

The resolution comes after much backlash from residents against the proposed redevelopment plan that called for a hotel, housing, restaurants, retail stores, a farm and a lake. The opposition stemmed from concerns of contamination and over development.

Since the redevelopment plan was first presented to the public on Oct. 24, residents have come out in droves to fill the committee meetings and share their concerns for the plan.

On Jan. 9, a group of residents that formed "Stop The Quarry" or STQP held a peaceful protest prior to the start of the committee meeting.

At the beginning of the meeting, Bernards Township Mayor John Carpenter told residents that there would be a resolution and discussion to terminate the Quarry Redevelopment Concept Plan draft at the upcoming meeting.

"I, myself, would like to see this come to an end," Carpenter said.

Newly elected committee member James Baldassare also noted that he is not favor of the quarry plan.

"I do not believe in the quarry plan moving forward and will not be supporting this plan," Baldassare said at the meeting.

The township committee will vote on this new resolution during the Wednesday meeting.
