Basking Ridge Teen Wins Junior Wimbledon Tennis Championship

Basking Ridge resident and high school student Samir Banerjee, 17, is the first American to claim this title in the past six years.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Seventeen-year-old Basking Ridge resident and high school student Samir Banerjee took home the trophy when he won the junior Wimbledon 2021 boys' singles title on July 11.

"Samir is the first American in six years to win that Junior Wimbledon Championship. So hats off and well done Samir," said Bernards Township Committeewoman Joan Harris.

"On behalf of Bernards Township I wanted to let you know how proud we are of you and your accomplishments," said Bernards Mayor Janice Fields in a phone call with Banerjee.

Fields added the township is planning to invite Banerjee to an upcoming meeting to give him a proclamation honoring his accomplishment.

Banerjee defeated Victor Lilov 7-5, 6-3 at the competition in London, England. This was his second appearance at the junior grand slam.

After delivering his final winning shot, Banjeree grasps his head and bends over in disbelief before raising his hands up to celebrate in the moment.

Gov. Phil Murphy also praised Banerjee's win as well.

"Congratulations to New Jersey’s own Samir Banerjee on winning the #Wimbledon boys’ singles title! We’re looking forward to watching you dominate the court for years to come," tweeted Murphy.
