Uptick In 'Courier' Scams Prompts Warning From Bernards Township Police
Scammers posing as banks or officials tell victims to withdraw cash, then send a courier to collect it.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Bernards Township police are warning residents about an increase in reported "courier" scams that have cost victims money in the Township and across New Jersey.
The scams typically begin with a phone call or computer contact from someone posing as a bank representative or another official department, according to Bernards Township Police.
The caller then tells the victim to withdraw cash from a bank account. After that, the scammer tells the victim to leave the money outside or hand it directly to a "courier" who comes to the home to pick it up, said police.

"It’s our hope that these scammers do not get that far; however, should they, as much information as possible is helpful for law enforcement," said police.
The department also shared several steps residents can take to avoid becoming victims:
- Never agree to give money to an unknown party
- If it appears a bank is calling you, hang up and call an official bank number directly
- Never respond to emails requesting funds
- Do not allow unknown parties to respond to your residence to retrieve funds, nor meet any parties at a separate location to exchange funds
"Let’s keep you, your money, and our township safe!" said the police.
