Burglar Climbs Through Window While Basking Ridge Owner Home, Steals 2 Cars

A $500,000 sweepstakes scam and a mulch fire were also reported in Bernards Township Police's latest blotter.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Police are investigating a home burglary in the township where car keys and two cars were stolen last week.

On Nov. 16 at around 6:55 a.m., Bernards Township Police Officers went to Meadowview Drive for the report of a residential burglary and motor vehicle thefts.

The victim told officers that both of their vehicles, a white 2023 BMW X7 and a black 2017 Bentley Bentayga were stolen.

The victim said they were home at the time but did not see or hear anything.

Officers and detectives determined that the suspects entered the home through the window, found the vehicle keys, and stole the vehicles, according to the police blotter.

A silver Kia Soul was found abandoned in the street nearby, and it was determined that the suspects used the Kia to drive to the area before stealing the BMW and Bentley.

Bernards Township Police Department(BTPD) reminds residents to lock all vehicles and home windows and doors. BTPD also requests that residents place vehicle keys in inconspicuous locations in the home in hopes to deter thefts. This case is being investigated by the Detective Bureau.

BTPD officers responded to nine motor vehicles crashes with no injuries reported. Two motor vehicle summonses were issued to drivers.

On Nov. 15: A resident of Smithfield Court responded to headquarters to report an identity theft scam. The resident advised they received a phone call from an unknown party claiming the resident was the winner of a $500,000 sweepstakes. The resident then provided the caller with their social security number and date of birth. Currently, the resident has not suffered any monetary loss. BTPD continues to remind residents to not provide unknown persons with personal information or send money to unknown persons.

On Nov. 15 at around 2:20 p.m.: BTPD officers and Liberty Corner Fire Company responded to King George Road for the report of a mulch fire. Upon arrival, officers and fire officials observed a small mulch fire around a tree. The fire was extinguished by responders. No injuries were reported due to the fire.

Please keep vehicles locked, without the keys in them and valuables out of sight. Please confirm all suspicious calls/emails/texts/messages requesting monetary payments with law enforcement or banking officials before sending funds.
