Celebrating with Apples at Zimmer Preschool
Through art, science, sensory activities, math, cooking and more, our infants through kindergarten have been exploring apples this autumn.
The children of Zimmer Preschool in Basking Ridge have been immersed in apples this autumn. Each class has actively explored apples, through taste tests and graphs, field trips to an apple orchard, and various art and cooking experiences. This culminated in a "Showcase of Learning" to which all of our families were invited.
Our infants experienced rolling and tasting apples and making art by stamping painted apple halves on paper. Our toddlers expanded their vocabulary and observational skills by pointing out and learning the names of different parts of an apple. They created tissue paper collages depicting the parts of an apple. Our 3s class created their own apple tree with paper mache apples that they had made. They voted on whether or not to paint the apples on their tree red or green and interpreted their vote through a picture graph. Our Pre-K children worked cooperatively in small groups to make sculptures of an apple tree in each season, adding minute details including blossoms, bees, and of course, apples. Our Kindergarten class made a series of pastels showing the progression of an apple being eaten from whole to core. They also created a composting tank for their real apple cores with a poster explaining how foods break back down into nutrient-rich soil.
Our Showcase of Learning, "Apples in the Sukkah" was a big family celebration! As the children arrived they were welcomed with a Zimmer t-shirt with an apple patch and apple face painting. The children showcased their art in our “Apple Museum” with a slideshow of each class at work, sang apple songs, and worked together to plant two new apple tree saplings. The evening was topped off with everyone gathering to eat the delicious apple foods that each class prepared including applesauce, apple bread, apple crisp, and even apple cookies.
