Customers Help Basking Ridge Stop & Shop Raise $995 to Fight Hunger
St. James Church is a beneficiary of store's participation in annual Food for Friends program.
Shoppers at the Basking Ridge Stop & Shop helped raise $995 to fight hunger as part of the store’s 21st annual Food for Friends program.
The funds were donated to St. James Church to help provide hunger relief to area residents.
The Food for Friends program ran in all 392 Stop & Shop stores Oct. 29-Dec. 10, 2010. Customers donated $1, $3 or $5 “paper turkeys” at local Stop & Shop stores, accounting for 90 percent of the record-setting $2 million raised.

Sixty percent of the funds went directly to local food pantries that stores adopt in each community; 40 percent was allocated to regional state food banks.
“We are overwhelmed by the generosity and support from our customers and associates for Food for Friends,” said Arlene Putterman, a spokesperson for Stop & Shop. “We exceeded the amount raised in 2009 by 4 percent. Even a tough economy could not dampen the spirit of giving that exists within the associates and customers in our communities.”
