Dead Dog Found On I-287 In Somerset County Prompting Animal Cruelty Investigation

NJ ​State Police are asking the public for help with the animal cruelty investigation following the discovery of the dog on Wednesday.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — A dead dog found on the side of Interstate 287 in Basking Ridge on Wednesday has prompted an animal cruelty investigation, said New Jersey State Police(NJSP).

At around 10 a.m., NJSP troopers responded to a report of a suspicious package located on the right shoulder of I-287 near milepost 25 in Bernards Township.

Troopers found a large green "Retriever" brand dog food bag containing the remains of a dead black canine, said police.

Detectives believe the bag was discarded between 10 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15 and 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or events leading up to it is urged to contact the Troop “B” Somerville - Criminal Investigation Office at 908-725-0107. Anonymous tips are welcome.
