Drawing/Painting Classes at Farmstead Arts Center, Basking Ridge

Adult & children's classes offered, ages 9+

Intro to Watercolors
1:00 pm – 3:00 pm; 6 weeks: Tuesdays, April 23 – May 28
$160 for members/$180 for non-members
Students will learn basic watercolor techniques, both traditional and non-traditional. Still lives and landscapes will be explored, as elements of composition, design, and basic skills will be refined through color, shading, value, and proportions. No previous experience required.

Drawing and Painting for Adults
7:45 pm – 9:45 pm; 6 weeks: Tuesdays, April 23 – May 28
$160 members/$180 non-members
Learn how to develop and apply the fundamental principles of drawing and painting and gain a greater understanding of varied mediums and techniques. Light and shadow, color, perspective, and composition will be explored in still life arrangements, nature studies and personal imagery. Demonstrations and individual attention will be given. All levels welcome.

Colored Pencil Drawing
10:00 am – 12:00 pm; 6 weeks: Wednesdays, April 24 – May 29
$160 members/$180 non-members
Explore and discover the range and special qualities of watercolor colored pencils. Drawing and painting principles will be applied in the of mixing and blending of colors on paper, overlays, washes, and value judgments. Choices of still life arrangements, landscapes, and personal compositions. Appropriate for beginners and beyond, all materials included.

Intro to Drawing for Adults
1:00pm to 3:00pm; 6 weeks: Wednesdays, April 24 – May 29
$160 for members, $180 for non-members
This class will introduce students to the fundamental principles of drawing. Students will work with a variety of drawing materials and learn to create realistic 2D imagery. No previous experience required.

Trompe L’oeil: The Art of Illusion
10:00 am to 12:00 pm; 6 weeks: Thursdays, April 25 – May 30
$160 members/$180 non-members
This course will explore drawing techniques that develop illusionistic, three dimensional compositions that “fool the eye.” Learn how to manipulate color, light, and shadow to create optical illusions that make you question your initial perception of what is real. All materials provided, no experience necessary.

Introduction to Pastels
2:00 pm to 4:00 pm; 6 weeks: Thursdays, April 25 – May 30
$160 members/$180 non-membersThis course in chalk pastels will introduce students to the basic principles of this medium, as well as experimental techniques. Students will learn how to develop their imagery, working from direct observation and photographic references. No previous experience required. All materials provided.

Painting on the Passaic for Teens & Adults
Sunday, May 12th, from 1pm to 4pm
$40 for member/$45 for non-members
Spend an afternoon enjoying a Sunday picnic in the bucolic setting of the Passaic River on the grounds of the Farmstead Arts Center. Have fun drawing or painting the surrounding landscape and buildings while exploring color, light, shadow, and perspective. No previous experience required. All materials provided, but bring your own lunch.

Drawing and Painting (Ages 9 – 12)
10:00 am – 11:30 pm; 6 weeks: Saturdays, May 11 – June 22 (June 15th skipped)
$135 for members/$155 for non-members
This class is an ideal way to introduce young artists to a variety of different materials, techniques, and the fundamental principles of drawing and painting. Students will strengthen established skills, as they have fun developing and exploring new understandings in color, perspective, and composition through still lives, photographic references, and imagination. Demonstrations and individual attention given. No previous experience required.

Teen Drawing and Painting (Ages 13 to 17)
1:00 pm – 3:00 pm; 6 weeks: Saturdays, May 11 – June 22 (June 15th skipped)
$160 for members/$180 for non-members
This class will introduce students to the fundamental principles of drawing and painting. Working with a variety of drawing and painting materials, they will learn to create convincing 2D imagery of the 3D world. No previous experience required.

Advanced Teen Drawing and Painting (Ages 13 to 17)
4:00pm – 6:00pm; 6 weeks: Saturdays, May 11 – June 22 (June 15th skipped)
$160 for members/$180 for non-membersAn extension of the Teen Drawing and Painting class. This class will deepen students’ preexisting understanding of the principles of drawing and painting.
