Drawing/Painting Classes at Farmstead Arts Center, Basking Ridge

Colored Pencil Drawing
Six Sessions – February 4 – March 10
Tuesdays, 10:00am – 12:00pm
$160 members/$180 non-members
Explore and discover the range and special qualities of watercolor colored pencils. Drawing and painting principles will be applied in the mixing and blending of colors on paper, overlays, washes, and value judgments. Choices of still life arrangements, landscapes, and personal compositions. Appropriate for beginners and beyond, all materials included.

Intro to Watercolors
Six Sessions – February 4 – March 10
Tuesdays, 1:00pm – 3:00pm
$160 for members/$180 for non-members
Students will learn basic watercolor techniques, both traditional and non-traditional. Still lives and landscapes will be explored, as elements of composition, design, and basic skills will be refined through color, shading, value, and proportions. No previous experience required.

Historic Sites & Buildings
Six Sessions – February 4 – March 10
Tuesdays, 4:00 – 6:00 pm
$160 for members/$180 for non-members
In this class, students will learn about and draw historic sites in the Basking Ridge area. Working from photographs, students will recreate these buildings in drawings and/or paintings.

Introduction to Pastels
Six sessions – February 5 – March 11
Wednesdays, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
$160 members/$180 non-members This course in chalk pastels will introduce students to the basic principles of this medium, as well as experimental techniques. Students will learn how to develop their imagery, working from direct observation and photographic references. No previous experience required. All materials provided.

Drawing and Painting for Adults
Six sessions – February 5 – March 11
Wednesdays, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
$160 members/$180 non-members
Learn how to develop and apply the fundamental principles of drawing and painting and gain a greater understanding of varied mediums and techniques. Light and shadow, color, perspective, and composition will be explored in still life arrangements, nature studies and personal imagery. Demonstrations and individual attention will be given. All levels welcome.

Indoor Studio Landscapes
Six sessions – February 5 – March 11
Wednesdays, 4-6 pm
$160 members/$180 non-members
Students will complete an outdoor landscape indoors working from direct observation, photographic references and imagination. Step-by-step instructions and demonstrations help develop an understanding of perspective, shading, color and compositional elements as representational three-dimensional spaces are created. Personal understanding and progress reinforced with individual and group critiques. No previous experience required.

Trompe L’oeil: The Art of Illusion
Six sessions – February 6 – March 13
Thursdays, 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm
$160 members/$180 non-members
This course will explore drawing techniques that develop illusionistic, three dimensional compositions that “fool the eye.” Learn how to manipulate color, light, and shadow to create optical illusions that make you question your initial perception of what is real. All materials provided, no experience necessary.

Six sessions – February 6 – March 12
Thursdays, 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm
$135 for members/$155 for non-members
his class is an ideal way to introduce young artists to a variety of different materials, techniques, and the fundamental principles of drawing and painting. Students will strengthen established skills, as they have fun developing and exploring new understandings in color, perspective, and composition through still lives, photographic references, and imagination. Demonstrations and individual attention given. No previous experience required.

Teen Drawing and Painting (Ages 13 to 17)
Six sessions – February 7 – March 13
Fridays, 7:30 – 9:30 pm
$160 for members/$180 for non-members
This class will introduce students to the fundamental principles of drawing and painting. Working with a variety of drawing and painting materials, they will learn to create convincing 2D imagery of the 3D world. No previous experience required.
