Environmental Education Center Programs

October 9 to October 15, 2017

The Somerset County Park Commission Environmental Education Center at 190 Lord Stirling Road in Basking Ridge has scheduled the following Naturalist-led programs to help children and adults enjoy the wonders of nature in Somerset County. The Environmental Education Center provides many entertaining and educational programs for children and adults year around.

PARENT/CHILD PROGRAMS

Fabulous Fall Foliage – NEW PROGRAM!

Thursday, October 12 from 10:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M.

CHILREN/TEEN PROGRAMS

River Rats

Saturdays, October 14, 21, and 28 from 10:30 A.M. to 12:00 Noon

Children age 5 to 8 will enjoy a weekend learning adventure, joining a

Naturalist for a themed exploration of the Great Swamp.

Fee is $27 per person for the 3-day session.

ADULT & FAMILY PROGRAMS

Family Nature Walk – FREE PROGRAM

Sunday, October 8 from 12:00 Noon to 1:00 P.M.

Family and friends will enjoy a Naturalist-led interpretive walk

through the Great Swamp.

The program is free and pre-registration is not required.

The Wild Life of Limericks – A Child’s Safari

Sunday, October 8 from 2:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M.

Family and friends of all ages will join Jean Merrill, author of “The Wild

Life of Limericks” who will take children on a visual and verbal

safari to learn about animals from around the world.

The programs is free and registration is not required.

Pine Barrens Paddle

Thursday, October 12 from 7:30 A.M. to 7:00 P.M.

Paddlers will enjoy some of the best paddling in the state, on pristine, tea- colored streams through old cranberry bogs, rich wetland

meadows, and pitch pine forest.

Fee is $75 per person.

Bird Walks

Saturday, October 14 from 7:30 A.M. to 9:30 A.M.

Adults will join a Naturalist on a stroll around the grounds of the EEC

seeking out the many migrant birds that pass through the area.

The walk is free and registration is not required.

Birding Identification Workshops – Sparrows – NEW PROGRAM!

Saturday, October 14 from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M.

Adults will enjoy an opportunity to begin, refine, or reinforce birding

skills in this year-long series of workshops focused on tips and

tricks to identify various bird species. This program will address

sparrows with mid-October the prime time to find these birds in

Lord Stirling Park.

The program is free and pre-registration is required.

“The Great Swamp Experience,” on the lower level at the EEC, features interactive displays, vignettes, taxidermy, and archeological artifacts highlighting the history and ecology of the Great Swamp. The exhibit is open 7 days a week from 9:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Admission Is free.

Please note that dog walking is not permitted on the trails at the Environmental Education Center.
