Environmental Education Center Programs

January 22 to 28, 2018

The Somerset County Park Commission Environmental Education Center at 190 Lord Stirling Road in Basking Ridge has scheduled the following Naturalist-led programs to help children and adults enjoy the wonders of nature in Somerset County. The Environmental Education Center provides many entertaining and educational programs for children and adults year around.

PARENT/CHILD PROGRAMS

The Green Team – FREE PROGRAM

Saturday, January 27 from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.

Children ages 12 to 15 - Is natural science a subject you find interesting?

Do you like the outdoors? Is the Great Swamp a place you like to

visit? If so, join the Environmental Education Center Naturalists

and contribute your talents to fun and educational projects and

special events.

FAMILY/ADULT PROGRAMS

Family Nature Walk – FREE PROGRAM

Saturday, January 27 from 10:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M.

Family and friends will enjoy a Naturalist-led interpretive walk

through the Great Swamp.

The program is free and pre-registration is not required.

Do Male and Female Bees Like Different Flowers? – FREE PROGRAM

Saturday, January 27 from 2:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M.

Michael Roswell, a Doctoral Candidate from Rutgers University, will lead

a discussion based on his findings from a research project to see if

wild bees seek out “boy food” and girl food” and what makes a bee

male, female, or both.

The program is free. Registration is not required

Wandering Around the Wallkill

Friday, January 26 from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.

Adults will venture to the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge

in northwest New Jersey to search for winter raptors, visiting High Point State Park, Lake Marcia, the Liberty Marsh Loop, and part of the Appalachian Trail.

Fee is $45 per adult and $35 per senior.

“The Great Swamp Experience,” on the lower level at the EEC, features interactive displays, vignettes, taxidermy, and archeological artifacts highlighting the history and ecology of the Great Swamp. The exhibit is open 7 days a week from 9:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Admission Is free.

Please note that dog walking is not permitted on the trails at the Environmental Education Center.
