Erratic Stolen Car Drives Into Oncoming Route 206 Traffic In Somerset County: Cops

Car thieves are still at large following a search by K9 tracking dogs and police helicopters on Wednesday.

PEAPACK AND GLADSTONE, NJ — Alleged car thieves are still at large after a police chase where one of the stolen cars drove into oncoming traffic on Wednesday, said Peapack And Gladstone Police Department.

At around 8:15 a.m. on June 7, Peapack and Gladstone Police were called to the area of Route 206 South for a report of a stolen BMW being followed by Chester Police, said police.

A second suspect vehicle, an Audi, was directly behind the BMW.

The BMW continued south, driving erratically. At times the driver went into oncoming traffic on Route 206, said police.

Officers did not chase the vehicle for safety reasons.

The Audi ran off the roadway just south of Potterville Road, where a suspect fled into the woods on foot, said police.

Officers from multiple agencies tried to find the suspect, including K9 tracking dogs as well as a New Jersey State Police helicopter.

After several hours of looking for the suspect, the search ended without an arrest.

The suspect was described as a dark-skinned man, wearing a dark hoodie.
