Police offered several tips to reduce the possibility of an attack:

· Maintain situational awareness. Looking down at a cell phone and not being aware of your surroundings can make you an easy target.

· Don’t look vulnerable. Walk with confidence, keep your head up and make direct eye contact with strangers.

· Walk safely and stay vigilant, especially at night.

The new self-defense program runs on Saturdays, Jan. 18 through February 8. It will delve into more self-defense techniques and best practices for staying safe.

Programs such as self-defense underscore the Y’s purpose of empowering young people, improving health and well-being and inspiring action in and across communities.
