Golf In Space: Meet the Astronaut Who Snuck A Putter Into Orbit

Hear former NASA employees famous for sneaking a golf club onto the space shuttle Thursday at 3 p.m.

What kind of golf enthusiast sneaks a putter onto the space shuttle?

Residents have the opportunity to meet retired NASA astronaut Brian Duffy and space shuttle flight simulation supervisor Tim Terry, 3 p.m. Thursday, at the US Golf Association Museum on 77 Liberty Corner Road.

Duffy, former commander of the space shuttle Endeavour, and Terry will give a presentation entitled "Shuttle Putter" about the 1996 voyage of the Endeavour when Terry arranged for a specially designed "space" putter to be stowed aboard the shuttle for Duffy to use in orbit.

The shuttle crew was able to analyze the effects of gravity on golfing as a result, dealing with the challenge of puts that could travel up and down as easily as left and right.

The presentation is free with regular admission to the museum ($7 for adults, $5 seniors, $3.50 ages 13-17, free for children under 13); refreshments and a free souvenir will be provided after the presentation. Guests are also welcome to take photos with the Duffy and Terry and ask for autographs.
