Holiday Spirit: Songbird Gives Back to the Community

On December 29, the Songbird Youth Volunteer Group maintained Finley Avenue, picking up waste and ensuring a clean community for all.

Despite the cold weather, the Songbird Youth Volunteer Group walked down Finley Avenue on Saturday, December 29, to clean up any articles of leftover trash, ranging from candy cane wrappers to cigarette butts. Because of their participation in the Adopt-A-Road program, Songbird sweeps this street at least four times a year, ensuring the safety of the environment as well as any passerby.

Although the December wind continued to blow, three members and two parents participated in this event. They separated themselves and each took a side of the street, starting at the center of town and ending at Basking Ridge High School. With their bright orange vests and gigantic work gloves, they divided the trash into two different trash bags: one for recyclables and one for non-recyclable waste. They found numerous water bottles, glass pieces, cigarette buttts and metal pieces throughout their walk.

The fact that this event was during the holidays and in the middle of winter break did not stop these members from being filled with enthusiasm and joy. While many people were at home watching Netflix or playing on their cell phones, these Songbird members decided to spread the true holiday meaning. The holidays are not just about receiving, but also about giving, and this was a great event to be with friends and family while also giving back to the community.

The Adopt-A-Road program is only one of the many events that Songbird does to help out around the community. They also perform at senior homes, cook for the homeless and pack books for Taiwan. Community service is an essential part of these member’s lives as it is a way for them to express their gratitude for the community that they grew up in. From Songbird to you, we wish you a happy new year!
