BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Horseback riding lessons are returning to the Stable at Lord Stirling Park in Basking Ridge this spring as part of the Stable's reimagining process during the COVID-19 pandemic. Students between 9 and 17 years old can now enroll in lessons.

"The Stable at Lord Stirling Park team is dedicated to creating a great equestrian atmosphere, and we are all thrilled to bring horseback riding lessons back to our community," said Somerset County Park Commission Director Dan Hayes.

He added that the Stable provides a variety of horses and ponies for different skill levels and instructors who focus on making lessons both enjoyable and educational.

Lessons are designed for both beginners and experienced riders, offering a progressive learning experience.

Horseback riding challenges both physical and mental skills, contributing to improved self-confidence, personal growth, decision-making, focus, and emotional control. Riders will develop into well-rounded equestrians as they build bonds with horses, acquire new skills, and enhance their coordination.

Private one-rider and semi-private two-rider lessons will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4, 5, and 6 p.m. for students aged 9 to 17 who weigh less than 190 pounds.

Private sessions require riders to groom, tack, and ride one of the Stable's lesson horses. Packages include five private sessions for $400 or five semi-private sessions for $350.

Registration for classes begins Monday, March 2. Interested individuals can call 908-722-1200 or email jnatanzon@scparks.org to register.

The Stable's programs were temporarily suspended in 2020 due to COVID-19. During this period, Somerset County and the Somerset County Park Commission formed the Lord Stirling Stable Advisory Group. This group developed plans to ensure the Stable could fully provide community equine services.

The reimagining resulted in a more inclusive Stable, which now includes a new state-of-the-art horse barn, 22 miles of scenic trails, pony parties, summer camps, and equine assisted therapy services, in addition to the returning youth riding lessons.
