Learn To Preserve Your Family History At Bernards Twp. Library

The Archive Lady will demonstrate how to preserve, protect and archive family records, and artifacts through a live-streamed presentation.

From Bernards Library: When the Bernards Township Library’s Family History Interest Group (FHIG) meets at the Library from 7:00 to 8:45 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, participants will learn from a professional archivist how to preserve, protect and archive family records, photographs and artifacts through a live-streamed presentation, just for FHIG.

Melissa Barker, aka The Archive Lady, is a Certified Archives Manager currently working as the Houston County, Tennessee Archivist. She is also a Professional Genealogist and lectures, teaches and writes about the genealogy research process, researching in archives and records preservation. She conducts virtual webinars like this all across the United States for genealogical and historical societies.

Barker will focus on best practices for organization, purchasing archival materials and practical records preservation that any home archivist can achieve! She will cover the steps archivists use to process small and large records collections at the archives and how you can use these steps to get a handle on your family records collections!

Barker is the author of a popular blog entitled A Genealogist in the Archives. She is the Reviews Editor for the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) magazine FORUM. She writes a bi-weekly advice column entitled The Archive Lady that can be viewed at Abundant Genealogy, and a monthly column entitled The Archive Lady’s Corner in the In-Depth Genealogist Magazine. A bi-weekly column called From the Archives for her local newspaper The Stewart-Houston Times is her work. She contributes regularly as The Archive Lady on Lisa Louise Cooke’s Genealogy Gems Podcast. She has been researching her own family history for the past 28 years.

Meetings of FHIG are FREE and are held from 7:00 – 8:45 pm in Program Room B on the lower level at Bernards Township Library, 32 S. Maple Ave. in Basking Ridge. Coffee is served at 6:30 pm. Come at 6:30 p.m. for refreshments and see if you might find treasure among the discarded genealogy materials that are free to new owners.
